On Saturday, March 4, United Nations members agreed on a treaty to protect biodiversity in international waters. Talks have taken more than a decade, but this treaty means governments will now work together to address issues of illegal fishing, pollution, and other issues crucial to the health and wellbeing of the oceans and their inhabitants. Oceans expert, Nichola Clark, with Pew Charitable Trusts said, "This is a once in a generation opportunity to protect the oceans — a major win for biodiversity." Read more about this historic event at NPR.org. What We Are Following... Africa Love the Wild supports education in various locations around the world, including in Kenya. One of our projects is to help students located in Oltome. Our desire is to help students learn, but in these unique circumstances we also helped them meet their basic daily needs. Another project for us is to provide support for environmental education at the Olasiti Community School in Amboseli. Here children are planting drought resistant plants in a project led by Isaack Parimbai, an educator and ambassador for Love the Wild. During 2022 and continuing into 2023, this area of Africa experienced its worst drought in more than 40 years. It is the 6th such season in a row where much needed rain failed to materialize. Projections are that almost 5.5 million people will be left without adequate access to food or water as this year continues. Livestock and wild animals suffer as well as their habitat is impacted. BELIZELove the Wild continues to provide support for education about turtle habitat and coral reef preservation and restoration efforts. We are also providing scholarship funds for Genievieve to attend Island Academy. In March, we met with some new organizations we hope to work with in the future so stay tuned for more news from Belize! In just the last two months, Love the Wild has donated 130 books. We sent 30 of our Lili, the Brave Bee's Flight for a New Home to Elephants Without Borders and 100 copies of Grizzly 399 and her Four Hungry Cubs book to Shriners Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City. We love sharing these educational opportunities! Here our books are being used in a 4th grade classroom to learn about Grizzly 399. Information about her was used to generate a chart about how many cubs the students think may come out of the den with her this year! Join Wild Green Kids Club!
