What's New at Love the Wild?

Wild Green Kids:  A New Club!

Calling all "Green Kids"!  We will be moving the Green Kids Club membership from Green Kids Club, Inc. (www.greenkidsclub.com) to Love the Wild Foundation!  The new club will be called Wild Green Kids!  We are super excited about this and plan to kick off further details in early May when we will announce to the children who are part of the club the new changes we are making.  Look out for an email and a new link on our homepage about this with details about membership!  New ideas we are looking at include more giveaways, possible field trips, and contests for those participating.  

Sponsored Readings and Donations

We continue to sponsor opportunities to educate students about environmental stewardship and make associated book donations – and as of late we have been hosting many virtual readings to classes!  This month we did a virtual reading of the Jade Elephant with the Edge Foundation, based in Miami, Florida.   At the back of the book, we highlighted Save Elephant Foundation, an organization advocating for elephants and their treatment, that was founded by Lek Chailart.  Lek and her organization work hard to teach people the importance of letting elephants be elephants - and remind people not to ride them or endorse their use for tourist entertainment, but rather let elephants live as they should.  She has set up sanctuaries and is working with local elephant groups to change the purpose for elephants:  abolishing them from being part of local elephant-riding businesses to a living happily in the wild.

Reading is Fundamental

Over the years we have donated many books to children all over the world and of various ages.  We are proud to announce that Love the Wild has donated over 12 of the Green Kids Club book titles to Reading is Fundamental, based in Washington, DC.  This group does wonderful work in sharing books with classrooms and children throughout the country. We are pleased to be supporting them!

We are pleased that the Foundation has a "boots on the ground" Program Manager, Edward Pemba in Kenya:  Welcome, Edward!  Edward is responsible for ensuring any programs or projects we have in the country are running smoothly.  He worked at establishing the project we have at the Oltome Maasai Village in Kenya, Africa (located on the outskirts of Amboseli National Park - see the photo below of children from the program).  He will also have a regular feature in our newsletter describing his country's environment and the amazing animals that live there.  His first corner is in this newsletter!

Children from the program we are sponsoring in Amboseli, working hard and learning about the animals and the habitat all around them!   Thank you to the amazing teacher who is working hard to make a difference and Edward for his work to manage the program.  

Love the Wild donated children's toys to the Shriner's Hospital for Children in Salt Lake City, Utah.  We hope that our gifts can help a child cope and lift their spirit.  

Field Trip at Pinecrest Gardens

Love the Wild sponsored a field trip for children who are part of the Edge Charitable Foundation based out of Miami, Florida.  We are thrilled to see these beautiful children get to enjoy loving the wild!  

SAVE THE WILD 

REBUILD THE CORAL REEF

We continue to sponsor individuals to learn about coral reef restoration.  Right now we are sponsoring a student that is part of Belize Grass Roots and working on the Coral Reef Project in Belize. This photo is one taken by the Coral Reef Project showing coral that is being grown by members of this project and restored to the area.  (The photo was taken with a camera that the Foundation purchased to help with this initiative). 

Belize Grass Roots is doing a magnificent job and our intentions are to continue working with them as they build up their program which will include mangrove restoration and also turtle habitat protection and restoration.

About Amboseli National Park:  The Ecosystem

A lovely little spot in East Africa, at the foot of Mt Kilimanjaro, is the tallest standing snow-capped mountain in Africa (19,341 feet or 5,895 meters), with elephants and herds of buffaloes and zebra grazing in the primordial wilderness. Amboseli's landscape was part of the mid-twentieth century's obsession with "Wild Africa" showing iconic photographs of elephants grazing by swamps or the ubiquitous tortilis and yellow acacia trees on the horizon. These photos fill modern photography books and nature magazines.

The Maasai argued they had always co-existed with wildlife.  Their cattle and wild animals coexisted from time immortal, since its location provided a stopover for tourists on transit to Tanzania or Tsavo. The Amboseli ecosystem is known as the the "Land of the Elephants and the Maasai People".

Borneo Rainforest Support

Love the Wild has been supporting The Orangutan Project with monthly donations to protect orangutan habitats. We are also providing a scholarship for Prillicia Gumbang, a young Indonesian woman going to graduate school to help foster orangutan survival and rainforest habitat conservation. 

​FUNDRAISER FOR ELEPHANTS WITHOUT BORDERS

The fundraiser for EWB is ongoing!  We continue to spread the word in support of our partners at Elephant Without Borders - please check out our online fundraiser that is sponsored by our partners at Green Kids Club.  With every $50 minimum donation, you will receive an Elephants Without Borders eco-friendly cotton tote bag featuring Molelo and elephant friends from the Elephants Without Borders sanctuary on the front, with a "Molelo the Fire Elephant" paperback book inside.  Although Molelo passed away in December we are still continuing with this fundraiser to help the other elephants at the orphanage. We hope that you will donate and receive your tote bag.  You may also support Elephants Without Borders by purchasing other Green Kids Club books about elephants featured here that are sold on our Love the Wild Foundation shop section of our website.
