We do this through sponsoring unique and accessible educational programs and supporting conservation efforts with next the generation in mind. WHAT'S NEW AT THE FOUNDATION Providing Environmental Education and Humanitarian Support to a Kenyan Village We are working with the Oltome Maasai Village in Kenya - located on the outskirts of Amboseli National Park. The village has close to 100 children that we are working with to help foster environmental education by donating for teachers' pay and ensuring the children are receiving adequate nutrition while going to school. This is an exciting initiative and we have just completed our first month working with the village. Sponsoring Readings and Donations We continue to sponsor opportunities to educate students about environmental stewardship and make associated book donations – and as of late we have been hosting many virtual readings to classes! We recently visited Belize and donated many copies of our book, The Belize Trash Monster to two schools there: the Island Academy and the Anglican School located on San Pedro Island. We were so happy to be able to donate this book to these students about keeping the beautiful beaches of Belize clean! We donated over two hundred Jade Elephant books to the Save Elephant Foundation, a Thai non-profit organization dedicated to providing care and assistance to Thailand's captive elephant population. We did a reading of our book, Princess, at the St. James Episcopal School. Princess is about an orangutan that learned to communicate with sign language. After our reading, we discussed the mass use of palm oil in foods and consumer products and the issues it creates causing the loss of habitat for orangutans and other wildlife. We have donated books to the Teton Regional Land Trust, the Teton Raptor Center, and Thunder Ridge High School in Idaho Falls. Additional links to readings of books about animals and conservation published by our partners at Green Kids Club that you may want to hear: Grizzly 399 - https://youtu.be/_Ps7ufpGnnY A Tail of Three Lions- by Sylvia - https://youtu.be/sj98QBlWcxs Inspired Classroom Grizzly 399 at Bigfork Art Museum Through the Bigfork Art Museum, we conducted an Inspired Classroom project teaching children about Grizzly 399! As part of this project, we also had the children do a mini-graphic novel depicting what they envision life is like with 399. It was a wonderful project that the children all enjoyed! If you are a student and/or teacher and would like to be part of our Superhero Bear: Grizzly 399 Challenge - please register here. STUDENTS AT TETON SCIENCE SCHOOL LEARN ALL ABOUT THE GREAT YELLOWSTONE ECOSYSTEM In December, Teton Regional Land Trust presented their Winter Ecology trunk to the 2nd/3rd-grade Falcons at Mountain Academy of Teton Science Schools. They are studying the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and the students were thoughtful in their exploration of the trunk and had great questions and observations about wildlife adaptations to a Yellowstone winter! They all knew about Grizzly Bear 399 and were excited to read about her and her cubs in the book by Sylvia M. Medina, with illustrations by Morgan Spicer and photographs by Thomas D. Mangelsen. Green Kids Club Inc. and Love the WILD Foundation donated these books for the students to enjoy. PROTECT THE WILD: |
We are currently providing a scholarship for a high-school/college student named Mariel Calderon, who is completing her diving certificate and will eventually work in the area of marine forensics. She is Belizean and the first in her family to complete a college degree! Belize Grass Roots is doing a magnificent job and our intentions are to continue working with them as they build up their program which will include mangrove restoration and also turtle habitat protection and restoration. |

BREAKING NEWS: AN END TO LION FARMING
On May 6, 2021 South Africa declared they will end lion farming practices as summarized in this excerpt. There has been continuous Lion Farming in the country for many years. At the time our partners at Green Kids Club published their book, A 'Tail' of Three Lions in January 2021, there were and still are about 12,000 lions in lion farms. These lions eventually end up in canned hunts or else taken and used for medicinal purposes. We are happy to have done a reading of our book with co-author Ian Michler and also a question and answer session giving us updates on the changes in legislation in South Africa. You can listen to a replay of the Q&A here.
